East Midlands firms fined after worker falls from roof

The two companies involved have been fined a combined total of £147,000 after a worker fell nine metres through a skylight on a building he was working on. He landed on a concrete floor and injured his back.

At the time of the fall, the worker had been completing some re-cladding work on a fragile roof.

A health and safety investigation into the accident found that the companies had failed to ensure that an effective management system was in place to control the risks involved with working at a height on fragile roofing.

It was found that there were no nets or guardrails being used and the fall arrest equipment did not have enough capacity. Also, the worker did not have his harness attached to anything.

The man’s injuries were described as life changing. He was required to undergo surgery to have metal rods inserted into his back.
