What path did you take to become a trainee?

I was lucky enough to undertake a year-long placement with Actons between my second and third year of undergraduate law at Nottingham Trent University. The placement reaffirmed my desire to become a solicitor and so I completed my third year before undertaking the LPC.

Why did you apply for a training contract at Actons?

When I applied for my placement, I liked that Actons were well-established and came with an excellent reputation. Towards the end of the year, Actons offered me the opportunity to come back 2 years later for a training contract. I knew I wanted to stay because the teaching I had been given was invaluable. Everyone at Actons, including the directors are willing to give up their time to help and feedback on the work produced. They recognise the importance of good training because at the end of the day, it benefits them as much as it benefits you.

Describe your experience as a trainee at Actons

I had seats in Property, Personal Injury, Dispute Resolution/Insolvency and Private Client. I am fortunate to have been able to train across a wide range of departments. It has given me access to many resources and has allowed me to improve my skills across the whole legal profession, from communicating with clients, drafting letters and preparing court documents. One thing I’ve learnt is, I won’t always get it right but I’m keen to learn, so I take advantage of the teaching Actons give at every opportunity.

Outside of the 9-5 life, Actons aren’t afraid to let their hair down. The CSR committee runs regular social events like mini-golf and comedy night, alongside the quarterly firm drinks. There is something for everyone!

My favourite part of the last two years are the charity events that Actons take part in. Actons regularly give back through their charity work, raising funds for a number of local charities. I have been involved in a number of events, including the gruelling Survival of the Fittest.

What advice can you offer applicants for training contracts at Actons

Actons value anyone that works hard, is eager to learn and show willingness. Be confident in your abilities and let your personality shine through. In the meantime, any additional hands-on experience is invaluable, whether that be work experience, vacation schemes or volunteering with your university’s pro-bono team.
