After visiting a tattooist whilst in Marmaris, Turkey, a woman had to face the fact that she may lose her foot after an infection caused by a £25 tattoo.
Just hours after having the tattoo, her foot became extremely painful, swollen and infected. She spent the night cooling her foot in the shower, after which it started to seep blood and pus. The next day she returned to the tattooist, who said that the cause was salt water, but the woman had never been swimming. His next excuse was her sandals rubbing on the tattoo, yet they weren’t in contact with it.
Upon returning to Glasgow airport she was rushed to hospital in an ambulance where she was told she may lose her foot, after 3 different courses of intravenous antibiotics failed to rid the infection which was deeply set.
A fourth course of antibiotics were tried and fortunately the infection cleared and her foot was saved from amputation.
There is greater risk of contracting infections and other risk-related symptoms when getting a tattoo from abroad as the regulations are not the same as in England.
Risks associated with any tattooing can include; the wrong tattoo design being applied, words being misspelt, ink injected too deeply, poor quality ink being used, a failure to use sterile equipment, or a failure to carry out a skin patch test beforehand.
