Children hospitalised after mistaking laundry liquitabs for sweets

Doctors have warned about the danger of laundry and dishwasher liquitabs after cases of children being hospitalised when they squeezed or bit into the tabs, mistaking their soft texture and bright colours for sweets.

As the liquitab containers are not child proof, children are able to access the liquitabs easily, causing immediate chemical burn to the throat when ingested, resulting in blocked and swollen airways and the inability to breathe.

A Glasgow hospital has reported 5 cases of children between the ages of 10 months and 2 years being admitted due to chemical burns from the capsules in the last 18 months. Many were in hospital for up to 2 weeks on a ventilator and one required further surgery in order to repair the damage to the airway caused by the chemicals.

The number of enquiries to a poisons information service about the ingesting of the liquitabs has doubled in the last 5 years.

It is vital that parents keep their liquitabs locked away, and even more important that if it is suspected your child has swallowed the chemicals, they must be taken to hospital right away.
