Why did you apply for a training contract with Actons?
When looking for a training contract, I wanted to find a firm in which I would be able to gain hands-on experience and be counted on as part of the team. Being from Nottingham, I was looking for a local independent firm where I could learn and develop as a trainee solicitor. Actons was one of the few firms which ticked all of these requirements.
What path did you take to become a trainee?
Following my LPC I took a position as a paralegal within a specialist residential property firm, before joining Actons as a paralegal. I was then offered a training contract with Actons after a successful period as a paralegal within the Corporate and Commercial department.
Describe your experience as a trainee at Actons?
My time during my training contract was hugely beneficial. Having spent the vast majority of my time within the Corporate and Commercial department I was afforded opportunities to get involved in many different aspects of work, which included drafting an array of documents, client contact during meetings and speaking to clients on the telephone. I was fortunate to be involved in various types of client work from the sale/acquisition of business shares and assets, preparing and negotiating corporate finance documents and reviewing and amending commercial terms and conditions.
My seat in the Insolvency/Dispute Resolution department helped to give me a balance of work away from Corporate and Commercial. I was afforded the chance to be involved with several cases which included the recovery of outstanding debt from companies in liquidation, a dispute over ownership of a valuable asset and the mediation of a contractual dispute.
Away from client matters, I enjoyed being involved with the various social events which include attending networking events over food and/or drinks, playing footgolf and summer/Christmas parties. I also enjoyed undertaking the Derbyshire White Peak challenge with several other members of the firm, walking a route of 26 miles across the Derbyshire Peaks, raising funds for Age UK Nottingham.
How did the training at Actons help you prepare for life as a qualified solicitor?
Ultimately, qualifying into the Corporate and Commercial team, I feel that my training contract ensured that I was as prepared for qualification as I could possibly have been. The variety and exposure to work and clients ensured that my transition to a qualified solicitor was smooth, although the expectations have of course increased.
What advice can you offer applicants for training contracts at Actons?
Actons is a fantastic firm to work for and offers a wide-ranging workload. Try to relax and always be yourself throughout the application process. Hard work and determination will be recognised so just keep going!
