Why did you apply for a training contract with Actons?

I was keen to pursue a career with Actons as it is a well-established, independent law firm in Nottinghamshire. Actons represents a wide-ranging and diverse client base, which trainees are exposed to very early on in the training contract.

Moreover, Actons is ranked in the Legal 500 for corporate and commercial work. This is an area of practice which I was particularly interested in. When I spoke to former Actons trainees, I discovered that the firm promotes a friendly and inclusive culture within the workplace. I felt that working in such an environment would allow me to excel and also offer an unrivalled learning experience.

What path did you take to become a trainee?

Upon completing the law degree, I went straight into completing the Legal Practice Course with an MSc in Law, Business and Management. Whilst studying, I also interned at a local law firm in Birmingham. On finishing the legal practice course, I worked as a paralegal for a few years to build my work experience and understand which areas of practice I was best suited to. Most notably, I worked in the corporate team of an international law firm for nearly two years immediately before starting my training contract at Actons.

Describe your experience as a trainee at Actons?

As a first-seat trainee in the firm’s personal injury team, I have been provided with a wide range of work. A month into the seat, I was given the opportunity to independently interview a client and take a statement. I am regularly given client contact and opportunities to work on complex matters.

I am provided with good feedback to gauge my own level of performance as well as guidance, where necessary. I feel that I can ask questions easily if I do not understand something which is very helpful.

What advice can you offer applicants for training contracts at Actons?

I encourage applicants to research the type of work which Actons does and the type of clients which we deal with. It is important to show a real passion for the type of work which Actons does.

I would also encourage applicants to do everything they can to differentiate themselves and stand out as much as possible. Get involved in societies at universities, volunteer at your local Citizen’s Advice centres, get involved in sports. Ask yourself, what you have done to make yourself a more well-rounded individual?

Build on your work experience as much as possible. This does not have to be legal experience. Volunteer work, working at your local supermarket or even becoming a committee member of your university society can all offer you a chance to develop your skill sets. Lastly, and this cannot be stressed enough, believe in yourself!
